Flag and Flag

Oh say can you see that there is a flag waving?

Recent days (on or about July 4th 2006) around the writing of this found me thinking about two efforts put forth to amend the Constitution; to protect the flag and marriage. My immediate thought was, protect them from what or whom? Can a constitutional change ensure proper behavior? Arguments can be made that every individual has the “right” to express their opinion. We all have the right to be wrong. Yes this is a play on words. All of the aforementioned is secular thinking and on the surface even makes sense but it brings dire consequences on a society because it has no individual or governmental desire for divine standards.

When the standards are imperfect the results can only be likewise. Thus the subtitle for this article refers to a warning flag. When we look a the-big-picture, desecration of the U.S. shouldn’t be overlooked when misled individuals want to abuse it for a cause as many bled and died to maintain our perceived freedom but, should we be overly concerned with this issue? I don’t think so. I am of the opinion the real issue is hearts and minds. Changing the hearts of individuals is more important than simply protecting the flag or marriage. This can also be extended to every other critical issue facing us today.

A flag or marriage amendment will never change a single heart by its passing. Flag burning is a nuisance at best. The marriage amendment, a response to same sex marriage, will never address the homosexual’s deepest desires. Both of these issues are related in that they are issues of the heart. It all comes back to standards, God has set them and to the degree that we disobey or don’t abide by His standards, the consequences are certain.

With this said, instead of “seeing red” over flag burning and homosexual lifestyles; understand the underlying cause of it all, sinful mankind. Yes, I know this is not a popular stand as we are naturally defensive and most of us are too arrogant to admit that we have faults. I am seeing red though; the red flag warning in scripture: Turn to God from Idols. Now is the time to get into a right relationship with God through Jesus Christ. I am convinced, as scripture points out, things will get worse in coming days. It’s time to change hearts and minds. The time is not to get aligned with God’s purposes, plans and principles. This can only be accomplished by surrender. A willingness to no longer live our way but God’s. How do we know when we are on the right track?

God’s good news never changes and never fails. His desire is that none should perish and He always wants the best for us. Understanding this simple fact exposes the “religious” and “irreligious” of our day. They only have their own interest at heart therefore, they are idol worshipers. Homosexuality, pride and all sin are self-indulgences that don’t agree with God’s plan as outlined in scripture. God requires perfection. Christ, the same yesterday, today and tomorrow has provided perfection through His sacrifice on the cross. He became sin for us that we might become perfect in Him. Heeding the red-flag warning and trusting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior is the only cure to the ills today. Will we continue to become dysfunctional by burning flags and participation in all forms of perversion or will we come together by joining God’s family? Watch and pray. Oh say can you see the red flag waving?
